CITY of York Hockey Club Men I went sixth in the North Hockey League premier division with a 5-2 win at Brooklands MU II.

Peter Fitton's strike backed up braces from Tom Feasby and Al Cockram as City put last week's disappointing last-gasp defeat to Deeside Ramblers behind them.

The game got off to the perfect start for City, whose three breakaway attacks yielded reward each time. Feasby slotted in the first, with his second coming minutes later from Alex Lake's pin-point pass, before Cockram clinically sent a short corner flying past the static keeper.

Brooklands responded to this third hammer blow, however, and the subsequent pressure won a penalty flick which dribbled agonisingly in off the post after the initial save.

City otherwise weathered the storm and restored their three-goal lead before the break as Fitton dispatched from the top of the 'D' into the bottom corner.

Expecting the hosts to come out strongly, City looked to shut up shop in the second period but the Brooklands pressure told 10 minutes in with a smashed ball being fired high into the net.

But City secured the points with 15 minutes remaining as Cockram slid in at the back post from arguably the move of the match.

This coming weekend, City host fourth-placed Timperley, who are unbeaten in eight games.

City II remain sixth in the Yorkshire League premier division after a 2-2 home draw against Sheffield Hallam III.

The hosts got off to a positive start, fending off early Hallam attacks before James Fitton put City a goal up from Dan Hyden's pass following an incisive ball from David Clamp.

Hallam, wounded, stepped up their attacking play and, although York largely stood firm as Hallam's forwards looked to turn the defence inside and out, the visitors equalised contentiously from a short corner. City keeper Dave Barraclough had popped the ball in the air, a Hallam man swung and missed, and the ball fell kindly for their forward.

The visitors controlled the game well after the break. Good work in midfield from Jack Bass kept the pressure on them, but they took the lead after finding a gap and playing the ball across the 'D' where City's Mike Hugill lost a tight battle with his man.

With minutes to go, a City short corner - following a quick shot by James Fitton - was poked over the line by Rob Newton to level matters.

City III lost 5-0 at Leeds IV in division one, while City IV beat cross-city rivals Acomb I 2-0 in division two thanks to strikes by Chris Wilson and Chris Dutton.

Both keepers made good saves in an even first half, while Tangerines duo Pete Hilton and James Tindall fired chances wide. Acomb's best opportunity fell to Matt Dickenson, whose penalty corner struck an upright and the crossbar before York cleared.

City put pressure on the Acomb defence in the second half while the Tangerines relied mostly on breaks, with Ryan Smith finding good areas on the right.

But with 13 minutes remaining York broke the deadlock when firing into the roof of the net from a narrow angle, and they got the killer second five minutes later.

City V lost 9-0 at Grimsby in division three, while, in division four north, City VI lost 8-0 to Harrogate V. There was better news for City VII, though, as Philip Cook's brace earned them a 2-0 win over Wakefield IV - their first of the season.

In division five north, City VIII lost 4-3 at Airedale II and City IX drew 2-2 against Ben Rhydding V.

Men's Development north division leaders City X lost 4-0 at home to Harrogate VII.
