DUNNINGTON reclaimed top spot in squash's Yorkshire Premier League after Hallamshire fell to a surprise defeat in the Sheffield derby to Abbeydale - despite the services of a certain Nick Matthew.
The three-time world champion made his fourth YPL appearance of term for his hometown club and saw off Jamaican Lewis Walters 11/5 117 11/8 – but it could not prevent Hallamshire losing the match or their briefly-held position at the league’s summit.
Abbeydale won 3-2, with champions Dunnington taking advantage by seeing off an understrength Queens Club 4-1 (18-5), despite missing number one Chris Simpson.
The York club saw Benjamin Cross, Ed Shannon-Adams and stand-in top string Julian Tomlinson all win in straight games.
Matthew Stephenson found life tougher against Danny Bray at fourth string, digging in to win 11/9 in the fifth, while James Earles posted three consolation points for the visitors from Halifax by beating Michael Andrews in four. Dunnington now have an eight-point lead at the summit.
