JOSH DICKINSON produced City of York Athletic Club’s star turn at the North of England Cross Country Championships by taking under-17 boys’ silver.

Dickinson was always in the lead group of his event at Pontefract, but could not quite match the pace of winner Sam Charlton (Wallsend) when he pulled away in the closing stages.

Charlton clocked 19 minutes 13 seconds for the 6.4-kilometre course, with Dickinson crossing the line in 19-26, seven seconds clear of third-placed Matthew Mackay (Rossendale).

City of York also won team silver, with Finnian Hutchinson (20-02) eighth, Archie Lawson (21-21) 46th and Toby Antcliff (21-30) 49th.

Maurice Calton-Seal secured York’s second top-10 finish of the day with an impressive sixth in the U20 men’s event over 8km, clocking 26-21.

Clubmate Georgia Rothwell finished 20th in the U20 women’s race over 5.7km, crossing the line in 21-00.

Lottie Langham secured 19th place in the 3km U13 girls’ event with an 11-08 clocking.

Joe O’Brien matched her placing in the U15 boys’ race, recording 13-18 for the 4km course and leading York to 13th in the team competition.

Charlotte Mason finished 44th in the senior women’s race over 8km, clocking 31-47.

York’s leading senior man was George Phillips, who came 148th in 44-36 over a 12.1km course.

The club’s indoor success continued with Lucy Hadaway winning the Scottish women’s long jump title in Glasgow.

Hadaway’s leap of 6.26 metres puts her top of the UK U20 rankings - a place also held by 800-metre runner Alex Botterill.

The York athlete achieved this with a time of one minute 48.85 seconds to finish second in his heat at the Vienna Classic.
