CITY of York Hockey Club Men I suffered last-minute agony in their first defeat of 2019 as they lost 3-2 at Deeside Ramblers.

The hosts scored the winner from a short corner earned on the final whistle to complete a second-half comeback which saw City drop a place to seventh in North Hockey premier division.

City got off to a sluggish start and fell behind after a Deeside player capitalised on a Michael Black error, beating two more York men before slotting low into the net.

Led by Al Cockram, City's front line probed the Deeside defence and got the breakthrough from a short corner. A perfect injection was stopped dead by Tom Feasby and dispatched in by Mike Carter.

York finished the half in the ascendancy and carried this into the second period, going 2-1 up after continued pressure saw Louis McManus drive a ball into the 'D' where it was casually deflected by Feasby past the helpless Deeside stopper.

Cockram then hit a post for York while Deeside were denied by a last-ditch tackle before winning a short corner from an illegal challenge. It was coolly dispatched to level the game again.

With the game heading into the final minute, a misplaced City pass was collected and carried forward by Deeside's attackers to win a short corner on the final whistle. The unorthodox corner broke down and fell to the striker who snuck it in the near post.

On Saturday, City host table-toppers Wakefield.

City of York II came out the right side of a 12-goal thriller in the Yorkshire Hockey League premier division, beating Slazengers 7-5.

Hosts York were soon a goal down but responded almost immediately through Chris Newton, who deflected in from Peter Bennett's pass.

But two clinical short corners later and York were 3-1 down following some sloppy play, before Richard Chandler slotted into the bottom corner from Newton's ball in and Dan Hyden deflected in at the back post to bring City level again.

The hosts then went into the break a goal up thanks to Chandler's back-post deflection.

City extended their lead 15 minutes after the restart through Rob Bradley-Consitt's reverse-stick shot into the top corner and got a sixth when Hyden stroked in a rebound following a fast counter attack.

David Clamp created the seventh with a superb 60-yard pass from centre-back straight to striker James Fitton, who fired a reverse shot into the bottom corner, before Slazengers pulled two back.

Russ Bowry scored as City III went down 2-1 at home to Boston Spa in division one, while Chris Dutton hit a hat-trick as City IV hammered Driffield II 6-0 in division two. Joe Stark (2) and Henry Birchall also scored.

City V came away from Leeds Adel III with a 1-0 win in division three thanks to Rob Prentice's strike.

In division four north, Chris Allerton was the sole scorer in City VI's 4-1 home defeat to Leeds Adel IV, while City VII lost 3-0 at Tadcaster Magnets.

City IX lost 3-2 at Scarborough II in division five north, Tom Feetenby and Brendan Plant scoring.

City X beat Airedale III 1-0 in the Men's Development north division thanks to Tom Gilbert's goal.

Acomb, meanwhile, lost 9-3 at Airedale in division two. The Tangerines host Lindum III on Saturday.

Acomb II, though, enjoyed a hard-fought 2-0 win over division five north strugglers Bradford III.

The hosts went close early through Jonny Brown but otherwise struggled to break down Bradford's solid defence and midfield while - at the other end - man-of-the-match Bob Unsworth led his defence well.

Acomb looked the more likely to score in the second half, but the Tangerines only made the breakthrough with 13 minutes remaining, Harry Ellis rifling in after Brown's good turn and pass.

Ten minutes later, John Forecast made the points safe, running into the 'D' and smashing into the bottom corner from a difficult angle.
