CITY of York Men II started 2019 positively with a home draw against promotion-chasing Bradford in the Yorkshire League premier division.

The Minster city side remain the only team this season to have taken three points off Bradford, triumphing 5-1 in the reverse fixture, but had to settle for a point this time round.

Despite the result, City slipped to eighth ahead of this weekend's trip to Halifax, who have won just once in their last seven attempts.

Bradford enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the early stages of the entertaining fixture, but any attacks on goal were thwarted by the centre-back pairing of Matt Andrew and Ben Reader.

With hard work in midfield, led by Jack Bass, City started to gain a foothold as the contest swung from end to end, but neither side could fashion any clear-cut chances and it was goalless at the break.

The second period was equally fast-paced, and the deadlock was finally broken when Bradford took the lead from a penalty corner.

City kept working hard and maintained their discipline - while Bradford earned a flurry of cards for breaking down play - and, with 15 minutes left, City got their reward.

Rob Bradley-Consitt was put through on goal and, despite several attempted fouls as he closed in on the keeper, the umpires played a good advantage to allow him to net his first goal of the season.

The hosts' man of the match was Andrew, who led City's defensive efforts in the closing stages.
