ACOMB Hockey Club Ladies suffered last-minute agony as they lost 2-1 to cross-city rivals and Yorkshire Women's League division one leaders City of York II.

Kerry Woods netted for the Tangerines before the break to cancel out Sarah Rogers' opener but, with just 15 seconds remaining, Rogers struck again to secure all three points.

The result keeps City six points clear at the summit, with a trip to 10th-placed Lindum II coming up at the weekend, while Acomb remain 11th ahead of their basement battle with bottom side Airedale.

City started the game well and took the lead in the sixth minute from their second penalty corner but, with seven minutes of the half to go, Keira Woods laid off for mum Kerry to neatly net the leveller from close range.

Acomb came out strongly after the break and good play between Hannah Yoward, skipper Vicky Wrigley, Roxy Farris and the Woods duo saw the former played clean through, only to sweep over.

The balance of play swung back in the table-toppers' favour and, in the dying moments, City got the winner.

Acomb Men II, meanwhile, opened up a five-point gap between fourth and fifth in Yorkshire League division five north with a 4-0 win at Harrogate VI.

Jonny Brown and man-of-the-match Harry Ellis both had efforts saved in the opening exchanges as Harrogate's defence frustrated the visitors for the first half.

Acomb took the lead 10 minutes into the second half with neat midfield play from Owen Wilkie and John Forecast allowing Ellis to take the ball into the 'D', where his reverse strike was turned home by a Harrogate defender.

Minutes later, Acomb had their second when Wilkie took on three defenders and set up Ellis for a reverse strike into the bottom corner, before Brown added a third and Wilkie rounded the keeper for a fourth.

Acomb I conceded their division two fixture against Ramgarhia.
