THE curtain came down on the New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club campaign with the Winter League play-off finals.

In the Australian pairs final, Diane Hardy and Kath Sykes led most of the way and managed to hang on to beat Dave Kermode and Bob Elliot 16-14.

The final of the vets mixed triples saw Judd Wakes, Anne and Dave Thompson pick up only six singles on the way to a 24-6 defeat by Pat Lancaster, Mick Head and Vic Thompson.

In the ladies pairs, Barbara Stokes and Pat Walker proved too strong for Margaret Pearson and Jenny Philpot, winning 26-11.

Mick Head, Ralph Tiplady and Paul Dawson made a good start in the men’s triples final against Bob Elliot, Kevin Liddell and Brian Gray.

They were 10-6 up after 13 ends, only to drop a three and a four at the next two ends to go 13-10 behind. Despite losing the last three ends by three shots to one, Gray’s trio hung on to win a thriller 14-13.

The men’s pairs final saw Bob Elliot and Brian Gray race to a 28-7 win over Dave Kermode and Dave Elcock.

Kermode and Elcock picked up three singles in the first 14 ends to trail 27-3 and they called it a day after 17 ends.

In the club mixed fours final, the Robins - Audrey Imeson, Brian Hardcastle, Majorie Watson and Dave Imeson - led 13-2 after seven ends against Osbaldwick Bs - Norma Davies, Doramy Bellwood, Adrian Ward and Terry Bellwood.

However, the Osbaldwick team fought back to level at 17-17 after 17 ends.

They took a three-shot lead at the next end but dropped five shots to one over the last three ends as the Robins won 22-21.

In the vets men’s fours, Gordon Fratson, Dave Kermode, Dave Elcock and Vic Thompson led 11-3 after seven ends against Dick Hardy, Eric Toms Vic Reed and Dave Sykes, but lost 20-19.

Lynn Page, Norma Davies and Monica Morgan were 21-16 winners over Carol Williams, Moyra Headley and Margaret Moss in the ladies triples final.

In the mixed triples final, Anne Peacock, Ron Wood and Brian Gray held an 11-5 lead after nine ends against Vic Wooley, Pat Walker and Andrew Fothergill, but Fothergill’s trio took the title 17-16.

The Heworth Cons team of John Harrison, Barry Cooper, Ken Harrison and Tony Abbot won 25-11 in their club men’s fours final against Shipton’s Rob Paylor, Pete Waddington, Barry Johnson and Brian Gray.

In the ladies fours, Audrey Imeson, Norma Davies, Diane Hardy and Majorie Watson beat Lynn Page, Doramy Bellwood, Maureen Wilson and Kath Sykes 20-16.

Dick Hardy, Dave Imeson and Dave Pearson were beaten 24-16 by Judd Wakes, Dave Thompson and Ralph Tiplady in the final of the vets men’s triples.

The final of the men’s fours saw Mel Lancaster, Dave Imeson, Kevin Fort and Tony Abbot beaten 29-11 by Dennis Dawson, Ray Boyes, Mick Head and Paul Dawson.

In the club any triples, the Greenhills side of Graham Bell, Bob Barrett and Ralph Tiplady beat Wigginton’s Pat Inwood, Mick Stannard and Barry Johnson 17-15.

YABA way

THE York Amateur Bowls Association team wrested the George Williams Trophy from the York Club & Institute Union side after four years in the annual season-opening challenge match at York RI’s Ashton Lane green.

The YABA team recorded a fine 107-90 victory.
