YORK-based Cathy Mitton will look to add another medal to her illustrious career as she represents Yorkshire this weekend.

Mitton is participating in the British Polio Fellowship National Indoor Games at Leicester Marriott Hotel.

The former Paralympic bronze medallist has a cabinet full of gongs from her number one sport, table tennis, but is excited about competing at kurling in this year’s events.

“I am not a professional at kurling and I have taken part in other sports over the years, but I am really looking forward to this years’ events,” she said.

The multiple medal winner will be representing her home county against 140 other members of the British Polio Fellowship, who have qualified via their own regional finals.

The 56-year-old said: “The games reflect the ethos of the British Polio Fellowship in the sense that there is no age limit and disability is not a bar, so anyone can take part and have a real chance to be really competitive if they wish to be.”

Mitton, who contracted polio at the age of two, said: “Kurling has been adapted to allow wheelchair users like myself to take part and this is one of the great things about the games, in no matter what your disability, it gives everyone the opportunity to take part.”

She added: “There can be a lot of technique and tactics in kurling and while some do take it extremely seriously, I am very happy just taking part.”

Mitton is thought to be one of Yorkshire’s main medal hopes this weekend.
