Joe Hart is reportedly set for disappointment when Gareth Southgate names his England World Cup squad on Wednesday.

The 75-cap goalkeeper, who spent this season on loan from Manchester City to West Ham, appears to be the odd man out with Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Nick Pope earning the three goalkeeping places in Russia this summer.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at the moments that spelled the end for England’s long-time number one.

1 Euro 2016

Hart was widely criticised for his positioning as Gareth Bale scored a long-range free-kick for Wales in their Group B clash. England came back to win that game and qualify for the last 16, but that was as far as they got after Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s shot slipped under Hart’s grasp to earn Iceland a famous win.

2 Axed by Pep

Following that tournament, Hart found himself out of favour with incoming City manager Pep Guardiola as the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss sought a keeper adept at playing out from the back with his feet. Claudio Bravo was given the first crack at the role before the more successful signing of Ederson 12 months later, while Hart was farmed out on loan to first Torino and then the Hammers. His confidence has never looked the same since.

3 Dodgy debut for “John”

His Serie A stint did not get off to the best of starts at Atalanta, where the teamsheet named him as “John Hart” before he gifted the hosts an equaliser by tipping a corner straight to the feet of Andrea Masiello, who slotted home to help his side to a 2-1 win. The season ended with club president Urbano Cairo criticising Hart’s form amid speculation over his long-term future.

4 Outperformed by Adrian

While Hart’s international form has been strong since his disappointing European Championship, his club woes have continued as he has been in and out of West Ham’s team. Sharing the season equally with 19 games apiece, Hart kept four clean sheets to Adrian’s six, conceded 39 goals to 29 and featured in three wins and 10 defeats, compared to seven and six for the Spaniard. Hart is also listed by the Premier League website as making four errors leading to goals this season.

Emergence of others

Jordan Pickford was one of the few bright spots of Sunderland’s Premier League relegation season before securing a £30million move to Everton, while Jack Butland has been a consistent top-flight presence. And even after Tom Heaton’s long-term injury prevented the Burnley keeper staking a World Cup claim, the previously unheralded Pope stepped in seamlessly to help the Clarets into Europe and seemingly book his own ticket to Russia.
