LEEDS United’s long search for an effective wide-man may have come to an end.

Former Brentford winger Stuart Dallas made an eye-catching debut as the Whites started the Uwe Rosler era with a 1-1 Elland Road draw with Burnley on Saturday.

The 24-year-old only joined the West Yorkshire club on a three-year contract on Tuesday having missed several days training with the Bees because of injury.

Rosler, his former manager at Griffin Park, knew he could trust Dallas in his preferred 4-3-3 formation and squeezed almost 70 minutes out of the Northern Ireland international.

In that time Dallas showed a perfect understanding of his role and almost broke the deadlock early on with an effort which cannoned on to the bar off goalkeeper Tom Heaton's legs.

Dallas received a deserved ovation when he was substituted but the decibel levels went even higher when the man who replaced him, Mirco Antennucci, put Leeds ahead with a spectacular curling shot on 83 minutes.

The lead lasted just three minutes as the home defence switched off and former Leeds loanee Sam Vokes planted a great header beyond Marco Silvestri.

Dallas was not the only United newcomer to shine. Tom Adeyemi, who also played under Rosler at Brentford, had an effective game as a defensive midfielder.

Chris Wood, the new striker from Leicester, worked hard but missed a couple of chances as Leeds had the edge in opportunities.

Rosler said: “I am very happy with the way we handled the first day of the season, the big crowd and the atmosphere.

“Everyone contributed to the cause and the tempo from the beginning was very high. On the chances we should have won the game but Burnley never gave up in the Premier League and they showed that same quality today.”

Dallas is likely to increase his game-time at Doncaster in the League Cup on Thursday while Antennucci’s super strike may have earned him a starting berth at the Keepmoat Stadium.
