CHAMPION jockey Paul Hanagan will be one of the guests of honour at the popular Middleham Stables Open Day in April.

Malton-based Hanagan, only the third northern-based jockey to win the prestigious title in a century, will be taking part in a question and answer session with leading trainers Mark Johnston and Ferdy Murphy, along with racing legend Jack Berry.

Organisers are planning the biggest and best Open Day in the event’s 22-year history, with a series of events, on Good Friday, April 22.

The question and answer session will take place on Middleham’s Low Moor in the afternoon, following a mini-marathon, organised by the racing charity Racing Welfare.

Other afternoon events will include a display of rehabilitated racehorses and guest appearances by leading northern jockeys.

Judith Brickwood, one of the organisers of the Open Day, said: “This year, we are planning the biggest and the best Middleham Stables Open Day in our history. We want to give everyone who comes a day to remember.

“As always, the town’s stables will be open in the morning, giving visitors the unique chance to see some of the best racehorses in the north of England and meet their trainers. This year, we have a host of afternoon events as well, which will add value and enjoyment to a fantastic day out.”

Each year, the successful training yards of Middleham are thrown open to racing enthusiasts. Last year more than 6,000 people attended and well in excess of £14,000 was raised for local charities.

Those opening their doors include Micky Hammond, Ben Haslam, Andy Crook, Chris Fairhurst and George Moore.

In addition, Ann and George Duffield are opening their successful Sun Hill Stables, at Constable Burton, from noon until 4.30pm.

The Middleham yards are open to the public from 9.30am until 1pm. Free parking is available in Middleham or nearby Leyburn, with bus links between car parks and the outlying stables.

Admission is £7 in advance for adults or £8 at the gate.

Children under 12 are admitted free.
