Channel 4 cameras will be at Wetherby today to show two live races, but armchair viewers are set to miss out on the most valuable event at the meeting, which is subject to an 8am precautionary inspection.

Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson, who described the course as having resembled “a boating lake” earlier in the week following torrential rain, remained more than hopeful last night that this seven-race meeting will go ahead.

The One Man Novices’ Chase, named after the ultra-popular winner of 20 of his 35 races, which included a dual success in the Charlie Hall Chase, takes pride of place today with £12,000 up for grabs.

A small but select field is set to face the starter and Gansey is my fancy to come out on top on behalf of Sue Smith and owner Trevor Hemmings.

A useful novice hurdler earlier in his career when trained by Paul Nicholls, Gansey then suffered problems and spent a long time on the sidelines before returning to action this season with Smith at her Bingley base.

Two runs over fences have been more than encouraging, not least his latest start at Haydock, which he won in determined fashion.

He faces a strong rival in Rory Boy, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, and the winner of his last two starts, but Gansey is held in high regard and, teamed up once again with Richard McGrath, he is fancied to add to his Haydock triumph.

Channel 4 will be showing the final two races on the card, both £10,000 events.

In the Book Corporate Hospitality at wetherbyracing. co.uk Handicap Chase, Sue Smith is again strongly represented by Camden George and Kilkenny All Star.

The latter won well last time out on this course, but I marginally prefer Camden George, who just failed to last home when narrowly beaten by Crocodiles Rock at Market Rasen last time over two-and-a-half miles. This return to the minimum trip will suit him.

Howard Johnson has his horses in good form and Canada Street should go well for the County Durham trainer in the Come Racing At Wetherby On Boxing Day Handicap Chase, the other televised contest.

Denis O’Regan’s mount looked to be coming to hand at Kelso last time out when finishing a close up fourth in similar handicap company. Also, he is a previous winner over this course and distance.

Tomorrow, the focus switches to Kelso for a high-class card, which includes the £40,000 John Smith’s Scottish Borders National. Royal Mackintosh, who warmed up with a hurdles win at Carlisle last month, is napped to scoop the pool.

Money Trix, the apple of Nicky Richards’ eye, also made a winning reappearance at Carlisle. He will be hard to beat in the £22,500 Eric Scarth Memorial Champion Chase.

In the £20,000 John Smith’s Paris Pike Novices’ Chase, Knockara Beau will be a tough nut to crack.
