IT might be a difficult name to pronounce, but there was no confusing Furmigadelaguista’s performance on the final day of the May Festival at York Racecourse.

Karl Burke’s five-year-old left the field trailing in his wake with a comprehensive three and three-quarter length win in the sportingbet.com Jorvik Stakes.

The Leyburn trainer’s 12-1 shot, ridden by Neil Callan, shot clear at the two furlong marker with a devastating injection of pace and romped past the post with no opponent in sight.

Sharati and Tilt, for Norton’s Brian Ellison, picked up the minor spoils – but they were only bit-part players once Furmigadelaguista fired for home.

Burke’s wife, Elaine, said: “The plan was to go for the Ebor last year, but he had a setback and couldn’t make the race.

“We’ll see how he goes from here, but the Ebor would be the plan. He ran well on quicker ground last year at Ascot, but he is probably better on a slightly softer surface.”

Sloop Johnb (8-1) looked a very comfortable winner of the Ralph Raper Memorial Stakes for Malton trainer Richard Fahey.

The three-year-old was a length ahead of Champagne Future, but looked to have a fair bit in hand.

Robin O’Ryan, Fahey’s assistant trainer, agreed. “He’s done it really well and he is going the right way," he said.

“He’s improving. He handled the ground really well so onwards and upwards. He pricked his ears up so you would imagine there’s a little bit left in the tank. We’ll keep our fingers crossed anyway.”

Fahey notched a double when Antigua Sunrise (6-1) was rewarded for a fighting display in the closing Constant Security Stakes.

And Valery Borzov’s stunning victory in the sportingbet.com Stakes made it a great day for North Yorkshire-based trainers.

David Nicholls’ five-year-old blasted out of the stalls in the six furlong sprint and the 6-1 chance never looked like being caught on his way to a two and three-quarter length win over Harrison George (85-40 fav) – much to the Sessay-based trainer’s delight.

“I have always thought a lot of him,” he said. “He killed them dead at half-way. It was never in doubt.”

Elsewhere, Nashmiah (2-1 jt-fav) brought up a double for Ryan Moore, who won the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on Ask, when narrowly getting the better of Moonlife in the Listed Michael Seely Memorial Fillies’ Stakes.

And Misheer (7-2 fav) justified her favourite’s tag to take the opening Langleys Solicitors EBF Marygate Stakes. Callan’s mount reeled in Dispol Keasha and held off Aalsmeer to record a head victory in the five furlong contest for two-year-olds.

York’s drain gain

YORK Racecourse chiefs said they were pleased with the way their £2.5 million track work project was dealing with a deluge of rain on the final day of the May Festival.

After 11 millimetres of rain fell between 8am and 1pm, chief executive William Derby said: “The drainage is working really well.”
