WETHERBY specialist Will Be Done bids for a hat-trick of course wins in the £33,000 Grade 2 Towton Novices’ Chase today.

Donald McCain’s progressive eight-year-old has bagged a brace at the track – taking the One Man Novices’ Chase by 11 lengths before scoring by an even more impressive 15 lengths in the skyvegas.com Novices’ Chase at Wetherby’s Christmas meeting.

Having already taken the step up to Pattern company, winning a Grade 3 Novices Chase at Haydock earlier this month, Will Be Done is now seeking a five-timer over fences. Tackling three miles for only the second time, McCain revealed he expects his horse to get even better.

“He’s going the right way and I would expect him to improve further with the step up to three miles on softish ground,” he said. “He’s rated 144 over fences now so we have to continue in Graded races and he obviously loves it round Wetherby.

“He has been given an entry in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and that’s a possible long term target for him. I hadn’t thought of him as a possible contender for the top novice chases this year, especially if you look at his Irish form, but he’s surprised me with his ability. If he gets the three miles and runs well at Wetherby, then we will certainly have to consider him for the RSA Chase because he keeps on improving and he keeps on winning.”

The Towton Novices’ Chase has been a proving ground for some useful performers over the years, with previous winners including Cheltenham Gold Cup victory Mr Mulligan in 1996.

The 2005 winner Ollie Magern subsequently returned to Wetherby to win the Charlie Hall Chase in 2007 while Halcon Genelardais, victorious in 2006, collected the Welsh National at Chepstow.

The race is the highlight of a seven race card which also includes the £20,000 totesportcasino.com Chase over an extended two and a half miles. The action gets under way with the TurfTV Hurdle at 1.15pm.
