PRECOCIOUS two-year-olds, handicap specialists and riding stars of the future will all have their chance to shine over two days of spectacular action at York Racecourse.

The October meeting, starting today, brings the curtain down on another fascinating season but everything is still to play for at Knavesmire's famous course. Today's highlight features the £18,000 TSG Stakes - a handicap contest for leading milers - while the opening race, a contest over the extended mile-and-a-quarter, will suit horses with a touch more stamina.

Handicap sprinters line up for the Persimmon Homes Stakes with the five-furlong dash representing racing's very own version of the 100-metre sprint.

The card concludes with the Betfair Apprentice Training Series Finale, where Sporting Gesture, trained by Mick Easterby, will take to the track in his 101st race - and 31st start at York.

The race is the culmination of a series of eight contests for apprentice riders in the UK, which began at Catterick in April. Kirsty Milczarek leads the standings, followed by William Carson.

Also attracting attention on a busy card is a maiden race for two-year-olds, as well as a Nursery handicap.

Tomorrow's principal race is the paddypower.com Sprint Trophy - a prestigious contest over six furlongs offering prize money of £35,000. It was won last year by Rising Shadow, trained by Thirsk's David Barron.

The Rockingham Stakes, a £25,000 Listed race for two-year-olds, is one of the season's best two-year-old contests, while the longest race of the day - a handicap contest for stayers over two-and-a-quarter miles - utilises the new bend and therefore the entire round course at York.

Saturday's busy card also includes a handicap race over nine furlongs, a maiden contest for two-year-olds and a handicap contested over the extended mile-and-a-quarter.

The concluding race, the Coldstream Guards Association Handicap Stakes is held over one mile and three-quarters.

All in all, it should be a fitting climax to the 2007 campaign.
