RICHARD FAHEY has won the race to be the leading trainer on the Yorkshire tracks during 2014.

The Malton-based handler produced a record number of winners during the Flat season, 79 on the county's racecourses, to take the award for the fifth time.

Nawton's David O'Meara was his nearest challenger with 47.

It was much closer in the battle to be the leading rider, with Graham Lee and Boroughbridge's Paul Mulrennan both finishing with 49 victories.

Lee took the award by having more second places. His winner on the final day of the Flat season at Doncaster last Saturday, on Lady Tiana, saw him over the line.

The former Grand National-winning rider is a previous winner of the award for being the top rider during a Jumps season in Yorkshire, having claimed that prize on three occasions.

With 129 victories in 2014, he is also the leading northern-based rider this year and has been crowned 'Cock O' The North'.

The trophies will be presented at the ‘Go Racing in Yorkshire’ Annual Awards Lunch on December 18 at York Racecourse.
