EVER wanted to look behind the scenes of the horse racing industry? The thrill of watching a horse on the racetrack, hearing the trainer and jockey planning a winning performance and experiencing the sight of watching these amazing animals on the gallops – all that is up for grabs to the lucky reader of The Press who wins a special competition.

Knockturnal is set to make her racecourse debut in a mares’ bumper at Doncaster on Sky Bet Chase Day next Saturday and The Racegoers Club is offering a reader a share in the horse.

Trained by Norton’s Malcolm Jefferson, Knockturnal is a five-year-old mare by Refuse To Bend, who comes from the same family as Ad Hoc.

She is leased from a breeder in Ireland.

The winner will receive a share in the horse until the end of April and membership of The Racegoers Club for the rest of 2013.

Also included will be all the benefits of being an owner, which will include:

• The chance to get an owner’s badge when she runs

• Visits to Jefferson’s yard to see Knockturnal, and other stars, in the yard and on the gallops

• Regular communication from Paul Smith, The Racegoers Club racing and social secretary, by email, text and post

• A confidential information line

• A share of prize money at the end of the season.

Although the share will expire at the end of April, the winner would be given the chance to renew that share for next season.

Share costs are a one-off payment that covers all expenses until the end of the campaign. It has previously been £180.

Smith said the idea behind the competition was to give people a taste of racehorse ownership.

“Our syndicates give people the chance to experience being an owner for a fraction of the cost,” he said.

“When you go to see the horses at the races, it is a terrific experience. It can also be frustrating at times – but it is fantastic.

“The aim is to run her three times before the end of April.

“It all depends on what happens in the first race.

“If she wins that, she will probably be kept in bumpers and then target some nice mares’ races at Aintree and the like.

“We could also crack with hurdles, but the first race is what will tell us.

“If people are keen racegoers, the club is run to encourage people to go racing.

“The main benefit of membership is the concessions – money off admission at racecourses and which covers 90 per cent of the fixture list.

“We put on other events, like stable visits which give people an insight into what goes on in the industry.

“That’s one of the great things about racing. Joe Public can get very close to the action.”

To enter the competition, which is being promoted by The Racegoers Club, readers should email racegoersclub@racecourseassociation.co.uk with their name, address and phone number, or phone 01344 625912 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday).

Entries must be received by 5pm on Tuesday, January 22, and The Racegoers Club have guaranteed the winner an owner’s badge for Doncaster, if Knockturnal runs.
