DARREN Brandon was the two-goal ace in the pack for Ainsty to post a York FA Sunday Senior Cup first round triumph over Nestle Volunteers.

Some 40 minutes had elapsed in the dour tussle before Ainsty's Mark Willoughby scored to break the deadlock.

Then early in the second half, Volunteers, who could only field ten players, struck back with goals by Mark Thompson and Mike McKenzie.

But enter Brandon. He levelled with a shot that zipped in off an upright and then a few minutes later he was on hand to poach the winner.

The tie between last year's finalists, Derwent United and Severus SC, was an hour old before the first goal went in when Matt Elsharis, with his back to goal, controlled the ball, swivelled and netted from the edge of the penalty area to give Derwent the lead.

Severus fought back strongly but went further behind through a Paul Holder penalty and a great team move finished off by Simon Collins.

Thorpe United took an early lead against Shoulder of Mutton through a Wayne Brooks header following a corner from the right. By half-time Josh O'Neil and Dean Wood had added further goals.

But after the break, Thorpe took their foot off the gas enabling Shoulder to pull a goal back, though that proved their lone reply.

York Nomads went ahead against Pocklington through Tom Robinson, who finished off a superb move that encompassed the length of the pitch.

Within 60 seconds of the second half Robinson seized on a goalkeeping error for his second. From then on in, Pocklington applied stern pressure but they could only break down the Nomads' defence once.

Gillygate FC and Selby Olympia Reserves produced an entertaining tie in the York FA Sunday Junior Cup.

After two good strikes by Dave Mullen, plus a 25-yard screamer from Steve Scott and a goal from veteran Dave Williams, Gillygate prevailed 4-2.

Holders Wanderers crushed Acomb Rangers 13-1 led by Dave Newton's four-goal haul.

It was midway in the first half before AFC Cygnet took the lead against Carlton Tavern through a 40-yard strike by central defender James Shimmin.

Ten minutes before half-time, Dean Farrow followed up for number two before Shimmin headed his second to confirm a 3-0 triumph.

Six-goal Kevin Butler helped Clifton overwhelm FTR Burnholme 20-2 in the York FA Sunday Afternoon Cup.

Last season's finalists, Law College, read the riot act to Kings Head when, with an Adam Bulmer hat-trick and a solo goal from Alistair McHenry, they won 4-1. Joe Jefferson bagged the Kings Head consolation.
