THORPE lifted the Grand Central League Cup after a 3-2 victory over Severus in the final.

The F1 Racing Premier Karting Sunday Morning Football League competition went the way of the Selby side, despite Severus enjoying most of the early possession.

Two efforts from Mark Woodward and John Lake produced good saves from Thorpe goalkeeper Paul Matthewman.

Thorpe, however, broke the deadlock when Adam Garner got on the end of a long ball and beat the ’keeper from six yards.

With time running out in the first half, Severus made it 1-1 with a well taken goal from Woodward.

The second half saw Severus again force Matthewman into action, but Michael Braithwaite beat the offside trap and lobbed the Severus ’keeper to make it 2-1 to Thorpe.

Woodward had two shots blocked by Thorpe defenders and a header from Mark Thompson shaved the crossbar.

However, Severus conceded a penalty after a defender handled a free-kick. Matty Dunne scored from the spot to make it 3-1.

Severus pulled one back in the last minute with a headed goal from Gavin Clamp, but it was not enough as Thorpe held on to win.

Meanwhile, the league is looking for a new sponsor for next season and any interested parties should phone league secretary Alan King on 01904 690110.

A spokesman said: “The league would like to thank Ian Yeowart and F1 Premier Racing for their support over the last three years.”
