FABINHO Almeida’s equaliser earned York a 1-1 draw in their penultimate FA Super League home contest against Newcastle.

But Junior Roberti’s men ended the match frustrated, having also hit the frame of the goal four times and seen a further chance cleared off the line.

The hosts were without both Matt Overton and Michael Bulmer due to their England call-ups for European Under-19 Championship duty in Croatia and it was Newcastle that forged in front on 11 minutes.

A succession of home defenders missed their tackles and the ball was forced into the York area, where Martin Michels saved a first shot, before the Newcastle forward forced the ball over the line from close range.

York responded strongly and should have been level by the break.

First, Almeida had a chance cleared off the line following good work from Daniel Pedras.

The latter then hit the bar, before Almeida struck an upright.

With seconds to go before the interval, great play from Tom Blackburn then saw Almeida strike the post again with a vicious shot.

In the second half, the game followed a similar pattern and, with five minutes to go, Pedras rattled another upright, having been teed up expertly by Roly Donoso.

But, 30 seconds later, York belatedly got their much deserved equaliser.

Robbie Bettson and Pedras combined down the right to find Almeida just outside the ‘D’ and, although he initially seemed to lose possession, he somehow managed to stick out his foot and powerfully toe poke the ball home.
