LEADERS Wigginton Grasshoppers made a good start to the new year in the Fastpack Ltd York Sunday Morning League with a 5-1 win over Malt Shovel.

Reuben Young scored twice, with John Cavanagh, Matty Mulhearn and James Edmond adding as Hoppers extended their lead at the top of division one to five points.

Cavanagh set the home side on their way to victory midway through the first half, slotting home from Chris Bilton's lofted through ball. Young nodded home a second-half Neale Holmes corner and added a third, pouncing after the Shovel keeper could not hold Mulhearn's initial shot.

Mulhearn made it four, waltzing past two defenders before firing home, before James Arnold netted the visitors a consolation. Edmond added Hoppers' fifth with 10 minutes remaining.

The only other top-tier game saw Atlanta beat Haxby United 1-0.

Division two leaders Thorpe United maintained their unbeaten start to term with a 3-1 win over third-placed Mitre. Nathan Sedman bagged two and Kyle Hesling one, with Danny Phillips scoring Mitre’s consolation.

Second-placed Tang Hall WMC remain five points off top spot after beating Rawcliffe United 5-1. Lennon Grayson bagged a brace with Roy Page, Joseph Rawcliffe and sub Andrew Rothwell also on target. Thomas Jackson scored for Rawcliffe.

Kings Head United drew 0-0 at Wentworth.

Kieran Nelson scored a hat-trick to help Clockhouse beat FC Pollington 7-2. Bradley Walters added two with Dylan Howlett and Callum Acko also on target. Sam Hirst and Luke Davis were Pollington's scorers.

Jason McLoud was the weekend's top individual scorer with a whopping eight goals as Elvington Harriers thrashed FC Harrogate 13-0. Frazer Shields bagged two with William Amesbury, Seb Crane and Kyle Spivey all adding.

Nine-man K Town United won 6-2 at York Medics. Thomas Drake and Liam Edmondson scored twice each while Alex Shaw and Mitch Sleight added. Matthew Russell and Jeffrey Wong scored Medics’ goals.
