LAST year's first and second placed teams went toe-to-toe in the York Minster Engineering premier league on Tuesday night.

And it was defending champions Wigginton Grasshoppers who emerged victorious – finally ending a five-year hoodoo from their trips to Old Malton St Mary's.

In a tightly fought game, Wigginton survived a scare early on when a long ball over the top saw their goalkeeper Michael Clancy carded for committing a foul outside the box to prevent a probable Malton goal.

However, the visitors grew into the game and took the lead after 20 minutes when Jamie Willstrop played a one-two with Matt Tiplady before driving the ball past Simon Cooke from just inside the area.

Minutes later and Cooke had to be at his very best to keep the scoreline at 1-0, producing an instinctive save to deny Eddy Clapham from close range.

The hosts came back, and a Darren Dunning free-kick sailed narrowly over the bar before Jordan Holt found himself at full stretch to clear a Marcus Godsell effort off the line.

However, the half-time whistle almost signalled the end of St Mary's significant attacks as the Wigginton defence kept them at bay for the majority of the second period.

'Hoppers looked the more likely to score, with Willstrop rattling the underside of the crossbar and Jake Duckworth going close.

The second and decisive goal came five minutes from time – Neale Homes playing though long-time sparring partner Gary Newton who produced a deft chip that evaded Cooke and fell into the net.

Huntington Rovers made it two wins from two after a 4-1 win at Hemingbrough United.

Chris Dyson gave Rovers the lead before 'Brough levelled via a Tom Collins effort. Second-half strikes from Josh Whaite, Dyson and George Brown wrapped up the points for the North Lane side.

Dunnington also continued their perfect start with a 3-0 win over Dringhouses following a fiercely contested game at Common Road.

Harry Lynn produced a bullet header at the back post to put the hosts in front before Angus Richardson doubled their lead after the break.

With 'Houses looking to get their foot back into the game they pushed forward and were punished when substitute Tom Anderson produced a neat finish to secure the victory for Dunnington.

Copmanthorpe also sit on maximum points after first half goals from Mark Featherstone and Jacob Green proved enough to gain them a 2-0 win over York RI.

A ding-dong game at Osbaldwick eventually saw the hosts run out winners over Malton & Norton with a last minute winner.

Dan Davison gave Osso the lead but two goals in the space of a few minutes from Scott Preston and Dean Nuttall saw the away side assume control at the break.

Isaac Clark produced a quality finish to level the scores early in the second half before Danny Penrose once again turned match-winner for the home side, smashing the ball home with five minutes left on the clock to seal a 3-2 triumph.

F1 Racing had the best of the game at Church Fenton White Horse, but found it difficult to create chances against a strong Fenton defensive unit as the sides played out a goalless draw.

Tadcaster Magnets picked up their first points of the season following a 1-0 success over Sporting Knavesmire.
