WIGGINTON Grasshoppers held off a Dunnington comeback to lift the York FA Sunday Morning Senior Cup and complete a trophy treble.

The Grasshoppers led 3-1 at half-time in the York MotorSports Village-sponsored competition and managed to shade it 4-3 despite a strong second half showing from Dunnington.

The FA Cup triumph comes in the wake of their York Sunday Morning League division one and cup double.

Wigginton took the lead on 31 minutes when Jamie Willstrop’s 20-yard free-kick was flicked into the Dunnington net by Josh Luckhurst.

On 42 minutes, Willstrop floated a 25-yard free-kick into the Dunnington penalty area which went over the heads of the defence and into the net to put his side 2-0 up.

With a minute to go to the break, Dunnington pulled a goal back as Jonny Andrew broke the Wigginton offside trap and, when his shot was cleared off the line, the loose ball was placed in the net by Jimmy Willmoth.

Wigginton regained their two-goal lead when Terry Taylor crossed from the right for Jamie Green to finish.

The second half started with both teams cancelling each other out until Dunnington pulled a goal back on 75 minutes through Rob Chipps, who finally put the ball in the Wigginton net after Theo Ainsley had two attempts blocked.

Willstrop played a one-two with Neale Holmes to score a fourth and Matty Wain’s 30-yard shot onto the Wigginton crossbar was knocked in by Ainsley, but there was no way back.

The trophy was presented by York FA president Roy Ellwood.
