OLD Malton St Mary’s retained the York FA Saturday Senior Cup after a 2-0 victory over York RI in the final at Tockwith.

The sides were locked at 0-0 after the first half of the Stoneplan Landscape Construction-sponsored competition.

Goals from Danny Fogg and Jon Newton in the second period ensured the Ryedale side kept hold of the trophy.

A series of strong challenges from York RI kept them in the game in the opening half. The first real chance to open the scoring came on 55 minutes when RI’s Lee Powell hit the Old Malton crossbar with a glancing header.

But Old Malton took the lead on 65 minutes when Fogg tapped in a loose ball inside the six-yard box. Saints made it 2-0 on 70 minutes when Newton’s cool flick found the corner of the RI net.

Dean Nuttall almost made it 3-0 when his 25-yard drive struck the bar, but the two goals were sufficient for Old Malton.

The trophy was presented by York FA president Roy Ellwood.
