WIGGINTON Grasshoppers edged past Enterprise on penalties after a hard-fought Ian’s Cars of Barlby League Cup quarter-final at Mill Lane.

Lee McQuade put the hosts in front after half an hour, only for Dale Lumley to equalise shortly after the break.

Hoppers responded quickly and Neil Walker restored their lead within minutes, but Charles Wrigley then struck for Enterprise to send the tie into extra time.

Carl Stewart’s powerful drive looked to have sealed the tie for Enterprise but Hoppers made it 3-3 when Lee Stewart converted a penalty with the last kick of the game to force a shootout.

Wiggington’s keeper Michael Clancey excelled with three saves to underpin a Hoppers’ 6-5 shoot-out success clinched by Dan Zambelli and clinch a semi-final showdown against Leeman United.

King William’s North Riding County Cup aspirations evaporated at the semi-final stage when they perished 3-1 at holders Clevedon.
