There was a major upset as the HPH York Vale Cricket League knockout competitions got underway with HPH Cup holders Drax falling to Bishopthorpe by 50 runs.

The Bishops exploited some sloppy fielding to reach 181-4, Danny Williams hitting 87no. In reply, Drax failed to master the bowling and never recovered from losing their top order cheaply, Ryan Bushell taking 4-43.

Stockton and Hopgrove set division one leaders Hemingbrough a challenging target of 167 as Steve Fraser hit 57no, but an opening partnership of 135 involving James Dougherty (63) and Michael Smales (69no) saw the hosts home with six wickets in hand.

Gus McKenzie (86) was on form as Askham Bryan YPO hit an impressive 214-5 against York. However, Toby Cleminson scored an unbeaten 108, supported by Matt Boyle (46), as York took the spoils with four overs to spare.

An unbeaten 111 from John Hughes saw Copmanthor-pe reach 175-4. Fulfordgate made a rapid response but lost their last eight wickets for 33 runs, with Chris Hall ending with 5-43.

Wheldrake had a comfortable win over Ben Johnson. The Printers were reeling at 35-5 and limped to 106 against Ashley Quinn (4-28). The hosts made light work of reaching the target, Chris Walker leading the way with 46.

British Sugar hit 188-6 at North Duffield, Mark Lovedale (52) and Steve Bellerby (63) doing well. The villagers looked set for a comfortable win as Lee Wild (55) and Tim Smith (52) enjoyed an opening stand of 121, but they saw Sugar claw their way back into the game and in the end only scraped home with four balls and three wickets to spare.

Westow, despite being 2-2 early on, set Heworth a challenging 239-5 thanks to Andrew Welford (68) and Alan Aitken (98). But an opening stand of 117 by Brian Garnett, who went on to make 116, and Paul Bracher (56), saw Heworth on their way to victory with five wickets in hand.

Richard Heald's 64no saw Clifton Alliance hit 156-4 against Burn, but it could not prevent a Burn victory by seven wickets as Rob Webster made 53no.
