LEADERS York Cricket Club cruised to a ten-wicket victory over Driffield Town in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

Spinner Dan Woods took five wickets as the Clifton Park visitors succumbed to defeat in only 55 overs after being bowled out for 96.

The sides shared the spoils in a tied match on the opening day of the season, but there was no repeat of the thrills and excitement of that encounter.

The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first, and opening bowlers Woods (5-32) and Jake Murphy (1-16) immediately applied pressure.

The scoreboard was still blank coming to the end of the third over when a mix up in calling gave Alex Collins the chance to swoop in from cover and run out Will Norman.

Woods bowled Ben Kohler-Cadmore two overs later and, when Murphy trapped Ricky Woodmansey lbw, the total stood at 12-3.

Losing three partners so early left opener Sanjaya Rodrigo (41) with little option but to try to drop anchor. He demonstrated dogged determination, facing 35 deliveries before getting off the mark.

Danny Broumpton (17), a century-maker when the sides last met, looked to be aggressive until he attempted to hit Tom Pringle (3-48) back over his head but miscued the ball to Duncan Snell at mid-on. With almost 19 overs gone the score was 35-4, with Rodrigo still in defensive mode.

Woods’ second wicket, Sam Drury trapped lbw, reduced the visitors to 56-5 and Pringle picked up his second after a drinks break to make it 71-6 in the 30th over.

Rodrigo’s 109-ball vigil came to an end when his patience ran out and, attempting to pull Woods into the legside, he missed and was clean bowled.

In the same over, David Brent chipped a catch to Ryan McKendry in the covers. A second catch at mid-on for Snell gave Pringle his third wicket, before Woods capped a fine performance with the last wicket of the innings, bowling Sam Tennant.

Following on from last week’s century opening stand against Rotherham, openers Liam McKendry (35 off 39 balls) and Snell (57 off 43 balls), took less than 14 overs to score the 97 required for victory. The pair hit 14 boundaries, on the way to securing maximum points for their side.
