YORK will be aiming to make up for the disappointment of missing out on a league title triumph when they taken on Pudsey St Lawrence in Sunday’s Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy final.

Victory in the clash with the 2015 Bradford Premier League champions at Sheriff Hutton Bridge would provide them with silverware at the end of a season which has seen them get pipped to the Hunters ECB Yorkshire Premier League North championship by Harrogate.

York, who won the trophy for the only time in 2009 when they defeated another Bradford side Woodlands in the final, will be boosted by the presence of Yorkshire batsman Jack Leening.

He is expected to open the batting with the prolific Duncan Snell after Joe Ashdown was ruled out after being injured in a fall last Saturday evening.

York have beaten Methley and last year’s winners Yorkshire Academy to reach the final against a Pudsey St Lawrence side who have specialised in nail-biting finishes in this season’s competition.

Ironically their first round tie was at Sheriff Hutton Bridge where they defeated last year’s Hunters York Senior League champions by two wickets.

Their semi-final against the 2015 South Yorkshire League title winners Aston Hall was even more dramatic. The match ended in a tie with St Lawrence securing their place in the final by losing one less wicket than their opponents.

St Lawrence, who have won the Black Sheep four times, last lifted the cup in 1988 when they completed the competition’s only hat-trick of wins.

Like York they have no overseas player and put a big emphasis on spin bowling. It will be intriguing to see how their trio of Steve Watts, Chris Marsden and Tom Hudson match up to York’s impressive Woods and Tom Pringle.

The match starts at noon. Admission is £2 except for under-11s who are admitted free.
