A THRILLING one-wicket victory over Rotherham Town propelled York to the brink of their seventh successive Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League title.

The league leaders need only six more points from their remaining three games to extend their record-breaking sequence of championship wins.

They appeared to be heading for defeat against Rotherham at Clifton Park until the intervention of number ten batsman Glen Richmond. He smashed four fours and a six in a crucial unbeaten 30 to steer his side to their modest victory target with one wicket to spare.

Rotherham had earlier won the toss and batted, with key knocks from Christopher Purshouse (46) and Nathan Smith (43) carrying them to 186 all out off 54 overs.

York skipper Dan Woods took his league wicket tally for the season to 76 after figures of 3-59.

Nick Kay claimed two wickets, as did Richmond.

York, missing prolific opener Jack Leaning, lost top-scorer Duncan Snell for two and Liam McKendry for 11, but Oli Hairs held the innings together with 71 off only 67 balls, bludgeoning seven fours and four maximums.

However, his dismissal left York on 113-6 and they were in deep trouble at 146-9 before Richmond teamed up in a match-winning stand of 43 with veteran ’keeper Nigel Durham, who finished on nine not out.

Title rivals Yorkshire Academy only picked up six points, leaving York 19 points clear at the top.
