YORKSHIRE starlet Jonny Moxon gets his chance to stake a claim in York Cricket Club’s first 11 when they go to SheffieId United in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County premier league tomorrow.

Moxon, son of Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn, replaces the unavailable opener Duncan Snell in the line-up as York seek to continue their excellent start to the new season.

Snell returns on Bank Holiday Monday as the Clifton Parkers travel to Hull and skipper Dan Woods says it is vital his side turn the screw even at this early stage of the campaign.

The captain watched in awe as Oli Hairs single-handedly took Beverley apart in the first round of the Kingfisher Beer Cup last Sunday – his 208 off just 92 balls – a reminder of his destructive capabilities – and wants that intensity to continue.

“I think it helps when Duncan and Jack Leaning batted the day before,” said Woods of Hairs, pictured. “He was sat there with his pads on and he knows you have to take the opportunity when it presents itself. That bodes well for us.

“Sheffield will be a tough game. They are always competitive so we will look forward to it.

“Jonny Moxon comes in for Duncan and it is great to have this relationship with Yorkshire. Hopefully they think we are a good club and a club that can bring on young players.

“It is fantastic to have Jonny and Jack Leaning playing with us and we will do all we can to bring them on.”

On Hull, Woods added: “It will be another tough encounter, I don’t think we have got any easy games. We didn’t play there last year as it was rained off but we have got to keep the momentum going, keep winning and increase confidence and morale.

“Winning becomes a habit and it’s great to see people having pride in their own performance and pleasure in the success of others.”
