HOLDERS York Cricket Club will host South Yorkshire League side Elsecar in round two of the Kingfisher Beer Cup after sweeping aside Beverley Town at Clifton Park.

Big-hitting Oliver Hairs was the York hero as he bludgeoned a double-century from only 89 balls to set up a 318-run victory over York & District Senior League side Beverley.

His unbeaten 208 lasted 92 balls and included 15 fours and 14 sixes as he led the home side to an imposing 409-3.

Beverley were then bowled out for 91 as York completed a straightforward victory.

The match began in dramatic fashion when Duncan Snell edged the opening delivery from Jonathan Fisher to Robert Fish, but the young ’keeper was unable to hold on to a difficult chance.

That set the tone for a poor fielding display by the visitors, who spilled no fewer than eight chances.

Snell (57) and Jack Leaning (67) both completed half-centuries in an opening stand of 120 in 20 overs.

Liam McKendry (51) played the perfect supporting role as he and Hairs added 209 runs at a rate of more than 12 an over.

Hairs hit a straight six to bring up his 50 off 40 balls, and his century came only 19 balls later.

He was dropped on 103 at long-on but hit sixes off the next three balls from James Emery.

A gentle push to long off for a single took Hairs to his double-century and the total to 400, and he added another maximum before the innings closed on 409.

In the face of such a daunting total, it was no surprise that Beverley offered little in response.

Only Jonathan Fisher, with 45, made double figures.

Ryan McKendry and Leaning picked up three wickets apiece and Daniel Woods two.
