YORKSHIRE and England cricket legend Fred Trueman is suffering from cancer, it was revealed on Saturday.

'Fiery Fred' will undergo a 15-week course if treatment for small cell carcinoma, a bronchial condition.

Trueman, 75, who captured 229 Test wickets, is now back at his home in the Yorkshire Dales after a short spell in Airedale General Hospital, Keighley.

Yorkshire's current cricketers were sad to hear the news of Trueman's battle against cancer when it filtered through to them during their Championship game with Kent at Canterbury.

Director of cricket David Byas said: "It is disturbing news but as we all know and appreciate Fred is a fighter and he will overcome this battle just as he has overcome previous battles on the field.

"The team send him their very best wishes and hope he will make a speedy recovery. He is a Yorkshireman through and through and he has always been so proud to have represented his native county as well as his country.

"Fred has made friends all over the world and they will all be hoping that he makes a complete recovery."
