Michael Vaughan announced his return to form at Headingley with 82 as Yorkshire beat Sussex by 14 runs in the Friends Provident Trophy.

Vaughan helped the Tykes amass 227-5 from their 50 overs before Tim Bresnan took four wickets and had a hand in a run out to thwart the visitors.

Vaughan, in at three after Andrew Gale had been dismissed, was fortunate to survive early on, booting the ball away from the stumps after it deflected back toward his wicket.

A series of fine strokes followed and he reached 50 from 87 balls.

Vaughan was controversially bowled by Robin Martin-Jenkins, with replays suggesting it might have been Matt Prior’s glove and not the ball that clipped off the bails.

Gerard Brophy then continued his outstanding form with the bat with an unbeaten 68 and Ajmal Shahzad let fly with a vital 43 off only 26 balls in the final overs.

Sussex were ahead of the run rate for the majority of their reply, but Bresnan starred with the ball to swing the game back in the home sides favour.

Bresnan also ran out Martin-Jenkins. It was appropriately left to Vaughan to help seal the win, tossing to Deon Kruis who ran out Will Beer as Sussex were all out for 213.

Meanwhile, a combination of determination and rain helped Yorkshire salvage a draw from their opening LV County Championship division one clash with Durham at the Riverside.

Yorkshire resumed on Saturday at three without loss, some 390 runs behind.

Facing a target of batting for 91 overs to save the draw, Joe Sayers (30) and Michael Vaughan (20) resisted for a long spell.

The Tykes were five down with 33 overs remaining, but the heavens opened and nine overs were chalked off.

Steve Patterson and Adil Rashid batted out the last 57 balls for the draw.
