BEN Coad and Keshav Maharaj starred with help from David Willey to fire Yorkshire to a superb 123-run Specsavers County Championship victory over champions Surrey at Scarborough with 10 balls remaining.

Yorkshire’s third win in eight matches this season came as they defended a 318 target in 83 overs and claimed five wickets for six runs in 35 balls either side of tea.

Surrey slipped from 157-2 to 163-7 and later to 194 all out inside 82 overs, meaning the hosts jumped to third place in Division One.

Yorkshire picked up 19 points and remain in title race behind their next two opponents Essex and leaders Somerset. The gap between themselves and Somerset is 36 points. Essex are next up at Chelmsford on Sunday.

Coad and debutant left-arm spinner Maharaj fought it out for the tag of the day’s standout performer.

First of all, Coad completed a career-best 48 from number 10 in Yorkshire’s second innings 352 all out and then claimed 2-30 from 14. Maharaj finished with 3-69 from 33.

But, while they were the obvious contenders, Willey’s fourth day contribution of a wicket and a run out was crucial.

Coad scored the majority of 49 runs added in the first 38 minutes of play as Yorkshire advanced their second innings from 303-9 overnight to 352.

Coad hit a six over long-on against Gareth Batty. But the Yorkshire-born off-spinner got his revenge by getting the seamer caught behind at the start of the day’s 11th over.

The last-wicket partnership between Coad and Duanne Olivier, started late on day three, totalled 57.

Surrey started their chase strongly as South African Test opener Dean Elgar hit 71.

He shared a 93-run opening partnership inside 29 overs with first-innings centurion Mark Stoneman (46) before Maharaj made the breakthrough.

Maharaj, Elgar’s international colleague, debuted in this match as Yorkshire’s short-term overseas signing and had Stoneman caught at short-leg by Will Fraine.

Elgar then reached 50 off 99 balls, only to lose Scott Borthwick as he played on to Willey (136-2 in the 38th).

But Willey was later in the action again to spark Yorkshire’s victory charge.

Running around to short mid-on, Willey threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end to leave Elgar, sold down the river by striker Patel, short of his ground - 157-3 in the 49th as tea approached.

Coad then uprooted Ben Foakes’ off-stump with a ball which just swung away from the right-hander with the first ball of the 50th over before getting left-handed Curran caught behind with one that just shaped away from him two balls later. Both England Test players had fallen for ducks.

Wickets continued to fall after tea to ensure Yorkshire ended a run of four successive defeats at North Marine Road, including against Surrey last year.

Maharaj had Patel caught at short-leg by Fraine - 163-6 after 53 overs - and Rikki Clarke caught behind for a duck in the 55th, leaving Surrey at 163-7.

Jamie Smith and Jordan Clark, the latter with one off 58 balls, then held things up for 17.3 overs by sharing 17, bringing the draw back into focus.

But Clark was yorked by Olivier from around the wicket at the end of the 72nd over before Tom Kohler-Cadmore ran Morne Morkel out, running to point from second slip, with a throw to the non-striker’s end with the first ball of the next over as Surrey fell to 180-9.

Olivier (2-32 from 13.2) and Coad took the new ball with three overs left and the former had Batty caught at second slip by Adam Lyth to seal a home win celebrated wildly.
