Yorkshire, led by 4-41 for Ben Coad, battled hard with the ball during another rain-affected day against Hampshire at Emerald Headingley - but the visitors held sway at the halfway stage of this Specsavers County Championship fixture.

Hampshire, replying to 181, secured a first-innings lead of 54 with 235 all out, including 50 from captain Sam Northeast and James Fuller’s unbeaten 54.

Only 11.4 overs of play were possible beyond 3.40pm. Yorkshire faced three of them in their second innings and closed on 5-0.

Both teams have largely bowled well in helpful conditions, with Duanne Olivier and David Willey both striking twice in support of Coad.

Miserly duo Steve Patterson and Dom Bess also claimed a wicket apiece in overcast conditions.

For Hampshire, Fuller’s innings was the feature on his first-class debut for the county. He had taken three wickets on day one.

Third-placed Yorkshire are far from out of this against a Hampshire side sitting in second. But they have significant work to do over the next two days.

Hampshire started the day on 14-1 in the 10th over and went on to secure the only batting bonus point of a match which has seen 10 batsmen out in the teens.

Yorkshire claimed three morning wickets, but Hampshire will be frustrated that two were giveaways as they fell to 93-4 after 35 overs.

Olivier struck first by getting Joe Weatherley brilliantly caught at second slip, one-handed, by a diving Adam Lyth.

After an attempted hook, the ball ballooned over the slips off glove - the batsman indicated shoulder - with Lyth back peddling and holding on with his right hand as he was also disrupted by Jack Leaning diving across him from third slip.

That left Hampshire at 32-2 in the seventh full over of the day - the 17th of the innings.

On 13 and 21, Northeast survived a run out scare and a caught behind chance to Jonny Tattersall off Bess.

That came in the on-loan off-spinner’s first over, which had just beforehand yielded the wicket of overseas Ajinkya Rahane for 31, untidily stumped by Tattersall as the Indian danced down the track trying to hit over the top (80-3 in the 34th).

Rilee Rossouw then played a bizarre and brief shot-a-ball six-ball innings for 12. He crashed a four and a six, the latter over mid-off against Willey, only to fall next ball trying to heave through the leg-side.

A top-edge handed Tom Kohler-Cadmore, peddling back from first slip, the first of two catches, with Hampshire now four down.

Yorkshire struck four times after lunch, but Hampshire rode with the punches to press ahead.

Olivier had Tom Alsop caught at second slip by Lyth (133-5 in the 35th) before Northeast reached his fifth fifty in eight Championship innings this season off 86 balls.

However, Coad had him lbw playing across the line with 143 on the board in the 48th over. When Patterson also trapped Ian Holland lbw eight overs later, Hampshire were 180-7 trailing by one.

Fuller ramped an Olivier no ball for six and lofted Bess straight for another, only to lose Keith Barker caught at slip by Kohler-Cadmore off Willey - 207-8 in the 67th.

Play restarted at 6.10pm after a two-and-a-half-hour delay, with Coad bowling Mason Crane and Fidel Edwards. Fuller reached 50 off 73 balls with a lofted six over long-on against Patterson, his third.

Thirty four overs were lost in the day.
