Matthew Waite and Duanne Olivier claimed a wicket apiece during the opening afternoon at Trent Bridge, but Nottinghamshire have the upper hand in the early stages of the Specsavers County Championship against Yorkshire.
Opener Ben Slater has top-scored so far with 76, but he feathered behind an attempted pull at Olivier, leaving Notts at 172-3 in the 50th over.
They have since reached tea at 222-3 from 64 overs.
Earlier, Waite’s seamers trapped Chris Nash lbw - 125-2 in the 34th over, the third of the afternoon.
Slater fell short of what would have been a third hundred in his last four innings against Yorkshire. He scored a one-day hundred for Derbyshire and a Championship ton for Notts against the White Rose last year.
Slater shared a half-century stand with new Notts signing Joe Clarke, who is unbeaten at tea and has since added an unbroken 50 with captain Steve Mullaney.
Clarke will begin the evening unbeaten on 40 and Mullaney on 31.
