Yorkshire completed their pre-season preparations with an innings and 151-run victory over Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities at Weetwood this afternoon.

The White Rose county claimed six wickets before tea on the third and final day of a clash which produced a number of positives with bat and ball.

Leeds/Bradford started the day on 91-3 in their second innings, trailing by 279, and they were bowled out for 219 in 74 overs.

Last man Josh Fallows was absent injured and unable to bat.

The wickets were shared around, with Mat Pillans striking twice after lunch - his first two competitive wickets in a Yorkshire shirt after signing from Surrey last August.

Pillans’ fellow South African quick Duanne Olivier also finished with two wickets, as did Ben Coad.

Jack Leaning, Steve Patterson and Matthew Waite all chipped in with one apiece.

Olivier struck once before lunch, but he left the field almost immediately nursing a knee injury suffered during his delivery stride as he slipped in the foot holes on the crease.

Thankfully, the fact he did not return to the field for the rest of the day was just a precaution, and he will be fit for Friday’s Specsavers County Championship opener against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge when England Test captain Joe Root will come into the team.

Olivier bowled Angus Dahl for 36 with a full toss which the home captain inside-edged onto his stumps, his fourth wicket of the match after two in the first innings.

Dahl and Saad Ashraf started the day having shared 61 for the fourth wicket in Leeds/Bradford’s second innings.

Play was delayed by half an hour due to rain.

Eight more runs were added to the overnight total before Dahl fell, while Patterson later had Darren Ironside caught low down at first slip by Tom Kohler-Cadmore (134-5).

Ashraf reached a polished 125-ball fifty just before lunch and finished with 62 off 144.

His innings was ended by Leaning’s off-spin. He struck with his third ball of the day, getting Ashraf stumped as the score fell to 163-6 in the 35 minutes into the afternoon.

Pillans then claimed his wickets in successive overs as Leeds/Bradford fell to 180-8 in the 68th over.

He had former White Rose second-team wicketkeeper Johnny Read caught at leg slip by Kohler-Cadmore, a plan to bowl short from around the wicket working in the space of just two balls.

He had earlier struck him a nasty blow on the helmet with a bouncer.

Pillans then yorked Andrew Neal before Waite wrapped up the win by getting Josh Holling caught at first slip by Kohler-Cadmore.

Yorkshire head into their Championship campaign on the back of a dominant performance this week, highlighted by Waite’s first-innings 5-16 as the hosts were bowled out for just 119 and then career best centuries for Kohler-Cadmore and Jonny Tattersall was the county responded with an imposing 489-8 declared.
