JARED Warner is targeting a competitive first-team debut after an impressive two-wicket display against Durham on day one of two in Potchefstroom.

The 22-year-old quick returned 2-20 from eight overs, looking as threatening as anyone, including Test fast bowler Duanne Olivier, as Durham were bowled out for 287 to start Yorkshire’s tour-ending friendly.

Captain Steve Patterson claimed three wickets, Mat Pillans two and spinners Josh Poysden and Karl Carver one apiece.

Josh Shaw made the initial breakthrough by trapping Alex Lees, stuck on the crease, lbw for nine.

South African Olivier went wicketless but was miserly on his first White Rose appearance as he conceded only 20 runs in 13 overs. He shared the new ball with Ben Coad.

Olivier did, however, force opener Cameron Steel to retire hurt following a blow to the head with a nasty bouncer.

Wakefield-born Warner has been a mainstay of Yorkshire’s Academy and second teams in recent years and has also played for England’s under 19s.

But he is still waiting for a first-team bow.

On this evidence, he will try and match Olivier and Pillans for pace this summer, but his control was an impressive feature against the North East county, who had to recover from 89-5.

“My aim for this summer is quite simple, I want to make my debut for Yorkshire,” said Warner.

“I’ve not played yet, so it’s my dream to play as many games as I can, in whatever format, and try to help the team.

“It will be tough because there’s competition for places. But if I start in the seconds, I’ve just got to back this up.

“After the 50-over game (against Cardiff last week), the first time out on grass, I wasn't the happiest with how it went. So it was good to get into a rhythm today.

“I had three spells and overs under the belt. I just want to push on into the season now.

“I thought I was a bit unlucky. There was an lbw shout early on. I deserved the two wickets, and it’s nice to get them under the belt.”

Ryan Pringle and Ben Raine shared 128 for the sixth wicket either side of tea to give Durham a boost.

Pringle top-scored with 75 off 69 balls before holing out off Carver’s left-arm spin.

Raine, who hit four sixes in a knock which was largely patient, nearly matched him with 71 before being trapped lbw by Warner, who later bowled Matty Potts.

Patterson had Jack Burnham caught behind, Michael Richardson caught at mid-on following a top-edged pull and Ned Eckersley caught at third slip in his 3-41 from 12 overs.

Fast bowler Brydon Carse cemented Durham’s recovery later in the day with an unbeaten 32 before Pillans yorked James Weighell and had Ben Whitehead caught in the slips in the same over to end the innings.

Durham lost their last four wickets for 11 runs, but they remained at the crease for the final few overs of the day. Yorkshire will bat on day two.
