Gerard Brophy, Yorkshire Phoenix's Twenty20 batting ace, will have a late fitness test at Hove this morning to see if he is fit to play in tonight's floodlit quarter-final clash with Sussex Sharks.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has been out of action for a week after fracturing the tip of his left little finger in the Roses match but Yorkshire are desperate to have him back as they bid to make it through to finals day on August 4 for the first time.

Brophy joined up with Yorkshire at Edgbaston on Monday in order to have a net, after which it was decided that he should make the trip to Hove along with Simon Guy, who will keep wicket if Brophy is unfit.

Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire's director of cricket, said: "I think the chances are about 50-50 on Gerard making it.

"He has played a crucial role in this form of cricket, in either opening the innings or going in at number three, and we want to give him every possible chance of playing against Sussex.

"It is very important for both the team and the fans that we make it through to the finals day at Edgbaston.

"I am sure that if we do manage it there will be a large following of Yorkshire supporters to cheer us on."

Brophy's batting form has been a revelation this season in all forms of cricket and he was his team's leading scorer in the Twenty20 North Division matches, with 144 runs.

But Yorkshire have so far not had any batsman to approach the form of Sussex's Luke Wright, who was the country's top-scorer in the group stages with 298 runs at an average of 49.66.

Moxon admitted that luck with the weather had played a hand in them getting to the quarter-final stages for the second year running, but they had also helped themselves by winning their last four matches.

"We rethought our plan after suffering three defeats and it worked," said Moxon.

"Andrew Gale was promoted up the order a couple of times and Jacques Rudolph's leg-breaks helped to take the pace off the ball.

"Tim Bresnan bowled with more confidence when given the new ball and Darren Gough's experience proved invaluable when he came on for the closing overs."

Pakistan batting star Younus Khan returns to the squad after missing most of the North Division matches because of his call-up for his country's short tour of Scotland, and this means there is no place for Chris Gilbert.

Joe Sayers is among the party of 14, but the intention is likely to be to give him some batting practice in the nets today so that he stays in touch for the important Championship match against Surrey, which begins at Headingley Carnegie on Friday.
