The mid-summer deluge sidelined Warwickshire and Yorkshire for the second time in three days in their LV County Championship fixture at Edgbaston.

After a washout on the opening day on Friday, Yorkshire made the most of 104 overs on Saturday when Anthony McGrath's unbeaten 142 helped them to 313-6.

Heavy rain returned overnight and, with surface water building up on the uncovered areas, umpires Peter Hartley and Tim Robinson abandoned the third day at 11.15am yesterday.

The lack of action has impacted on Matthew Hoggard's plans to build up his match fitness for the first npower Test match against India at Lord's on Thursday.

The England paceman has bowled only six overs since the series with West Indies finished on June 19.

Bad weather has followed Yorkshire around in the last week. Yesterday's call-off is their fourth blank day in six following a wet Roses match against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

In the same period Warwickshire have lost three days - including one against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl last week.

McGrath's second century of the Championship season had created a solid platform for Yorkshire.

The division one leaders lost two early wickets - including England captain Michael Vaughan for six - before McGrath held sway.

The 31-year-old made an unbeaten 142 in six hours and shared in partnerships of 87 with Younus Khan and 175 with Jacques Rudolph, who looked set for his fourth Championship hundred until falling for 82.

After scoring only 62 runs in his first six innings of this season, McGrath has now piled up 427 from the next six visits to the middle. This surge in the four-day game was underpinned by two hundreds in the Friends Provident Trophy and a useful contribution in Yorkshire's progress to the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals.

Having reached 50 in 135 balls, there was a marginal quickening in tempo as he completed his century with his 15th four from 226 balls.
