YORKSHIRE Phoenix face a tricky problem in who to leave out against Durham Dynamos at Headingley Carnegie tomorrow in order to accommodate England captain Michael Vaughan.

The comfortable victory over Derbyshire Phantoms on Thursday night has renewed Yorkshire's hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Friends Provident Trophy but to stand any chance of doing so they must beat Durham and then overcome Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Headingley on June 13.

Everyone in the team performed well at Derby but someone will have to make way for Vaughan, who wants to polish up his batting ahead of the third Test against the West Indies which begins at Old Trafford on Thursday.

It is a tough call for captain Darren Gough and director of cricket Martyn Moxon, who said that Vaughan's return was one of two issues which would be tackled shortly before the start of the match.

"First of all we need to see what the pitch is like and we also need to keep an eye on the weather forecast," said Moxon.

"We have once again got left-arm spinner David Wainwright in the squad, and whether he comes in as the main spinner or we ask Jacques Rudolph and Younus Khan to share the job will depend upon the conditions," he added.

"If David plays, then someone else is going to have to stand down in addition to who drops out for Michael Vaughan."

It is a fair bet that Wainwright will once again be 12th man and that Andrew Gale will be omitted for Vaughan, despite the left-hander's unbeaten 40 against Durham and his consistent batting in the competition this season. In four innings to date, Gale has made 151 runs for twice out to leave him with an average of 75.5.

Richard Pyrah is another under threat but he has taken seven wickets at only 22.85 runs apiece with his medium-pacers and he has become one of Yorkshire's outstanding fielders in one-day cricket.

Another poser for Gough will be where Vaughan should be slotted into the batting order. Craig White and Rudolph put on 122 for the first wicket at Derby and Anthony McGrath is well settled in the number three spot where he has scored 253 runs in four innings, one of which brought him 135 not out against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Younus, who hit a century on his one-day debut against Nottinghamshire, generally bats at number four with Gale following him.

The good news for Yorkshire is that Gough appears unlikely to be seriously affected by either the tight hamstring he experienced at Derby or the heavy knock he took on his middle right finger when trying to hold on to a bullet-like return drive from Graham Wagg.

"Darren felt a twinge at the top of his hamstring and because he was concerned he may have pulled it he went off for some manipulative treatment but he was fine afterwards and ran in well later in his spell when he took three wickets," said Moxon.

"It was a hard blow which he took on his finger and it is still a bit stiff but he doesn't seem too concerned about it."

England have agreed to let Paul Collingwood play for Durham against Yorkshire but not Liam Plunkett or Stephen Harmison, who both turned out for the Dynamos in yesterday's Friends Provident match against Worcestershire Royals at Riverside.
