Darren Gough is pressing for all Yorkshire players to wear the county colours regardless of whether or not they have been awarded their first-team caps.

If the management board supports the new captain's recommendation, then all sweaters will have on them the distinctive colours of Oxford Blue, Cambridge Blue and Gold.

"The only difference will be in the emblem which will remain the white rose for capped players and the rosebud for second-teamers," said Gough.

"Everyone is playing for Yorkshire and everyone is very proud to be doing so.

"I have spoken to the players and they are all very enthusiastic about the idea. If it were up to me I would bring it in tomorrow but it is for others to decide.

"It is right the first-team cap and the rose should be earned but once you play for the side you should be awarded a sweater as happens at most other counties in England."

The sun shone warmly at Yorkshire's media day at Headingley Carnegie and the entire playing squad seemed genuinely delighted Gough was back at his native county and running the show.

One of his main aims is to make sure the whole playing-staff gels together and he has already made four youngsters feel they are a more important part of the set-up by awarding them their second team caps in La Manga last week.

Early on in the trip, Gough handed over the caps to Ajmal Shahzad, Sheriff Hutton's Nick Thornicroft, David Wainwright and Adam Lyth, who hails from Whitby.

"I did it because I thought they fully deserved them," said Gough. Some of them have been on the staff since 2003 and they have all earned them."

Gough praised the players for their attitude and excellent work-rate and said there was a buzz about the place.

"They know if they put in good performances they will be rewarded but they also know I will take no bull**** and so far I cannot fault them in any way," he said.

"It turned out to be very wet in La Manga but nobody missed training or tried to get out of it and I was very pleased with that. They gave 120 per cent."

He admitted, however, that he had some tough decisions ahead of him over the next week or so regarding team selection for the first Championship match against Surrey at The Oval starting on April 18.

"One of the five seamers is bound to miss out as is an opening batsman and one of the two leg-spinners and it also has to be determined whether Simon Guy or Gerard Brophy will start off as wicketkeeper," added Gough.

England paceman Matthew Hoggard is looking forward to the new season after taking a good break since returning from the Ashes series and he will be available for the first few Yorkshire fixtures, but his opening game will be for MCC against county Champions Sussex at Lord's starting next Friday.
