WOODHOUSE Grange, pipped to the Hunters York and District Senior Cricket League crown, scooped top individual honours at last night's annual dinner.

While champions Easingwold received the Thirsk and District Trophy for lifting the premier division title, Grange gained some consolation at the the league's big night out at York Racecourse.

Grange skipper Nick Hadfield won the Des Wyrill Trophy premier division batting award after his 843 runs aggregate brought him an average of 64.85.

Steve Burdett captured the Alan Shipley Secretary's Cup for the best bowling average as his 31 wickets came at a meagre cost of just 11.61.

Completing the Grange treble was Burdett's brother, Mike, whose 40 victims, saw him pouch the Brian Shirley trophy for wicketkeeping.

Clifton Alliance's Australian paceman Paul Boraston was the leading wicket-taker in the premier division with 56.

With two Saturday's wiped out by the weather, it was the first time that any home-based player failed to get 50 wickets, Acomb's Dave Sykes leading the way with 42.

The leading overseas star was all-rounder Mohammed Ashfaq Ahmed, of Heworth, who won the Tony Frith Trophy after taking 56 wickets and scoring 690 runs at an average of 49.29.

Teenager Michael Linsley was a clear winner of the Bill Pool Memorial Trophy for the best young player. The Malton and Old Malton all-rounder scored 419 runs at an average of 32.23 and took 32 wickets at a cost of 21.56.

A total of 449 people were entertained at the dinner by former Glamorgan players Robert Croft and Tony Cottey.
