PREMIER division front-runners Woodhouse Grange showed their strength as they handed out a ten-wicket mauling to hosts Goole Town in the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League.

Lee Haywood, with 31, and Richard Mann, who made 28, scored half of the home side’s 115 runs, but Grange skipper Steve Burdett put his side in command with 6-63 and spinner Nick Hadfield claimed 4-33.

Hadfield then hit 49 not out as he and Andy Bilton, who made an unbeaten 60, knocked off the runs in 25.4 overs.

The third and fourth-placed sides were in opposition when York went down at Dunnington.

With the exception of Simon Lambert, who made 47, York’s batsmen failed to get to grips with the twin threat posed by Adam Iyer (4-35) and Dave Kitching (3-27) as they were pegged back to 130-9.

Collis King gave the champions a good start with 39 before 25 from Dave Johnson and an unbeaten 27 by Adam Sutcliffe clinched a seven-wicket victory.

At Shipton Road, Beverley beat Clifton Alliance by two wickets with more than seven overs to spare.

Three home batsmen reached the 30s but were unable to build a large score as Clifton were dismissed for 190. Tim Weaver made 36 not out, Jason Gatus got 35 and Simon Corley made 30.

Beverley stalwart Simon Roe had a 4-59 return from 20 overs, while Steve Blake took 3-35 in a five-over spell.

Peter Groves made 36 and Jon Fisher hit 34 before Anthony Spence’s 50 successfully countered the efforts of Joel Hughes (3-60) and Rich Carroll (3-33).

Fenner’s Ross Davy was dismissed off the penultimate ball for 72 when his side totalled 185-7 batting first against visiting Easingwold.

Easingwold romped to an eight-wicket win with eight overs to spare on the back of a 158-run second- wicket stand between Steve Piercy and Matt Turnbull. Turnbull hit seven fours and two sixes in his 64, while Piercy’s unbeaten 96 featured 14 fours.

Title-chasing Stamford Bridge are second, 11 points behind Woodhouse Grange, after winning at bottom side Heworth.

Mark Lynch made 28 and Richard Bowling got 40 but the first half honours rested with all-rounder Steve Sergeant, who claimed 6-48 as Heworth were all out for 151.

Stamford skipper Matt Beckett then led from the front with an undefeated 60 and Sergeant made 47 in a seven-wicket win.

Two relegation threatened sides fought out a draw at Sessay, with the hosts bagging 27 points and visiting Studley Royal taking 17.

Sessay’s Mark Wilkie made 118 not out in his side’s 216-4, while Nick Thorne hit 30 and Tom Hixon took 3-56 for the Royals.

The 48th over produced 16 runs for Studley and the game entered its final phase with the visitors needing ten off the final six deliveries.

Gary Blackburn had earlier hit 86 and George Lamb was unbeaten with 26 when the Ripon-based side closed marginally short on 212-8.
