SKIPPER Steve Burdett led from the front as Woodhouse Grange beat Dunnington in the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League’s curtainraiser, the President’s Challenge Trophy.

Premier League Cup winners Grange beat premier division champions Dunnington by 21-runs at Dunnington to lift the first trophy of the campaign.

A 67-run fourth-wicket stand in six overs between Burdett and his brother, Mike, set up the win.

Woodhouse’s Nick Hadfield made the game’s top score of 66 before Steve Burdett hit 46 off only 25 balls and Mike crashed 32 as Grange added a crucial 103 off the final ten overs to close on 210-5 from their 40 overs.

Dunnington skipper Paul Miles led his side’s response with a top of the order 55, which included five fours and three sixes, as he and Dave Johnson (37) saw the champions move to 103-1 before both fell in quick succession.

Simon Dwyer (35) kept his side in the hunt, but Steve Burdett (3-31) bowled an important seven overs which applied the brakes and left Dunnington 21 runs short of their target on 189-6.
