ROWNTREES roared into the second round of the York and District Senior Cricket League Readman Trophy with a comfortable victory over Cawood at Mille Crux.

Hosts Rowntrees were giving the visitors 45 runs start but this proved to be no obstacle as the Cawood batsmen were only able to supplement this by 81 runs as good bowling by Graham Pearce (3-15) and Dave Whittle (4-16) restricted them to 126 all out. Rowntrees were then able to move to a comfortable seven-wicket win as Sean Marshall made 40 and Gerry Capelin 36.

Sheriff Hutton earned the right to meet Rowntrees in the second round when they overcame a 30-run handicap to soundly beat Yapham by eight wickets with ex-Civil Service man Mark Bradley making 60 and Brian Dale 37. Yapham had earlier been destroyed by Andy Raper whose 5-21 left his side with the relatively simple task of chasing 133.

New Earswick eased to an eight-wicket win over Londesborough Park who were bowled out for 103. John Routledge (23no) and C Smith (26) led Earswick home.

With the cushion of a 30-run handicap, Thorp Arch & Boston Spa made 185 all out with Mike Cole making 50 and Whitkirk's Adam Coleman claiming 4-35. Coleman followed with 26 when Whitkirk replied and team-mate Craig Shipton struck an unbeaten 88 but was unable to engineer victory for the Leeds side whose reply closed at 180-5.

At Goole, the home side had a comfortable victory over newcomers Welton who were beaten by eight wickets. Allied to a 45-run handicap, Welton totalled 156 as Ashley Hulme claimed 4-16 in seven-and-a-half overs and Kev Murphy bagged 3-18. Aussie player Hulme then followed with an unbeaten 67 as he and Anthony Rogers (27no) knocked off the runs after Anthony Gibbins (35) had become one of two home batsmen to perish.

Despite their poor league form, Osbaldwick proved to be vastly superior to their hosts Huby who never looked capable of bridging the two-division gap even with the benefit of a 30-run award from the handicapper.

For the home side, Sam Protiykus made 38 and Chris Cundall 25 but 14-year-old Tom Young produced his best senior cricket figures in claiming 4-33 as Huby were all out for 168. Osbaldwick's only minor setback was the loss of an early wicket before Matt Dunne (76 no) and Simon Levison (43no) clinched a nine-wicket victory.

Harrogate's sorry season continued when they were unable to field a side for their visit to Folkton & Flixton and conceded the tie.

Two teams playing off level par met at Bridlington where Ripon's lengthy Bank Holiday trip brought scant reward when they suffered a seven-wicket defeat. A trio of home bowlers connived to dismiss Ripon for 113 with only Gary Blackburn (29) showing any defiance as Ian Winterbottom claimed 3-7, Casey Rudd 3-25 and Sam Edmondson 3-34. The latter then continued to plague Ripon as his unbeaten 37 steered the hosts to a clear cut win.

Sewerby found themselves on the losing side as Pocklington's higher division side confirmed their status with a four-wicket win. Chris Briggs had reached 70 before he was run out while Robin Coates added 27 as Sewerby posted a total of 218-7 with Alex Downey taking 3-28. Pocklington then sported two half century makers in their ranks with Ian Camwell heading their reply with an unbeaten 74 and New Zealander Sean Houltham making 50. They were able to reach their target as John Chaplin weighed in with 39.

No play was possible in six other ties because of the weather and these will now be played on Sunday.
