ECHOES of 2005 are spurring on Sheriff Hutton Bridge in cricket’s Yorkshire Tea National Village Cup.

The Strensall-based club beat Hunters York & District Senior League premier division rivals Studley Royal in a thrilling finish to book a fifth-round trip to Wolviston on Sunday, June 30.

Wolviston were Sheriff Hutton Bridge’s quarter-final victims en route to their 2005 success in the competition’s showpiece final at Lord’s.

The Moor Lane club are four wins from a return to the home of cricket after edging out in-form hosts Studley by four runs in a nail-biting finale.

Batting first, the Bridge were bowled out for 152, with Adam Fisher scoring 38, Paul Oldfield 33 and Mark Fisher 25.

Steve Walmsley took 4-31 for the Royals, while Gary Blackburn had figures of 3-29.

Studley went into the last over of their chase needing four runs to tie the scores – and win on fewer wickets lost – but young left-arm slow bowler Ben Harrison conjured up a wicket maiden to seal victory.

After four dot balls, Harrison dismissed Studley’s number ten and their last man was run out off the final ball, leaving them 148 all out.

Harrison’s superb spell earned him figures of 1-15 from nine overs, while Mark Fisher claimed 4-33.

Andy Mackie top-scored for the hosts with 35, while Matt Pickles hit 26.

Sessay, winners of the trophy in 2010, will take on Scottish opposition in round five, hosting either Kirkwood or Meigle on June 30, after a 75-run victory at Ryedale Beckett League side Harome.

Nick Thorne hit 76, sharing an 81-run stand with Tim Hall (34no), as Sessay made 188-5 from their 40 overs and Harome were all out for 113 in 27.1 overs, with Liam Carver taking 4-26 and Richard Till 3-21.

In round six on Sunday, July 14, the winners of the Sheriff Hutton Bridge and Wolviston match-up will host the victorious side from Sessay’s tie.

The final of the competition will be at Lord’s on Sunday, September 8.
