WOODHOUSE Grange – double winners in 2012 – are already celebrating the first trophy of the 2013 Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League campaign.

The Sutton-on-Derwent-based club, who won the premier division and Premier Cup last season, beat visitors Clifton Alliance by six wickets in the curtain-raising President’s Trophy.

Clifton elected to bat first and raised a respectable 176-8 from their 40 overs, with captain John Gilham leading the way with 45 off 60 balls, including four fours and two sixes.

He was well supported by Jason Gatus (32) and Ryan Partington (22), but the batting was held in check by Woodhouse’s frugal six-man bowling attack.

Steve Burdett took 3-41, but the 2-18 haul in eight overs captured by Nick Hadfield was crucial.

There were further wickets for Tom Quinn and newcomer Josh Jackson, while David Suddaby completed a runout and Jackson contributed a fine catch.

Woodhouse’s reply was totally dominated by Hadfield, who stroked a majestic 102 off 105 balls with nine fours and five sixes.

He combined in a first-wicket partnership of 73 with Mike Hattee (28) and a second wicket stand of 71 with Chris Bilton (20).

Alex Renton took 2-29 in seven overs as Woodhouse came home by six wickets at 177-4 with four overs to spare.

League president Bernard Stevens made the trophy presentation.
