WHOEVER wrote Matty Blair’s script this season did an amazing job, said York City’s Wembley hero.

Blair notched the most important of a string of crucial goals – following efforts at Luton and Newport in the FA Trophy and Mansfield in the play-offs – with the strike against the Hatters that sent the Minstermen back into the Football League.

“Whoever it is has written another corker,” said the 21-year-old former Kidderminster winger when asked about his fairytale story at York.

“It just feels amazing.

“It is some story. 16-years-of-age and playing in Racing Warwick’s youth team and now League football. Wow. When you look at it like that, it’s pretty good.”

Blair’s goal, two minutes after the restart, came following a Dan Parlsow flick-on. Although replays showed the forward – who was claiming his 20th goal of the season – to be offside, Blair added: “When Pars is going for a header, nine times out of ten he is going to win it.

“I’ve managed to run off my man. I’m told I was offside but a goal is a goal.

“I don’t really care. That’s what they (assistant referee) are there for and if he is not doing his job properly and it benefits me, great.

“Pars has flicked it on and I have managed to poke it in the back of the net. Most of my goals have come like that.”

Blair reflected on his decision to leave Kidderminster in the summer to become a key cog of manager Gary Mills’ promotion drive and, having previously described his Trophy goal at Kenilworth Road as his most valuable, has now revised his position.

“It was a hard decision,” he said of his move to York.

“It wasn’t easy because Kidderminster were the first club to offer me a full-time contract. They are still in my heart but I have to say it was the right decision.

“It has been not just a great season for York but a great one for me as well – scoring 20 goals from wide and being a part of such a great squad has been amazing.”

He added: “Luton away in the semi-final of the Trophy had been the best goal I ever scored, the most valuable and the most precious to me.

“It got better at Mansfield, it got better in the Trophy and it has got better again.

“The feeling is just incredible. I’m happy to have scored but it’s about the whole squad.

“It’s great I scored but I am not taking anything away from the lads.”
