GOAL hero Matty Blair revealed the thought of going to Wembley for the FA Trophy final has left him pleased as punch.

The 22-year-old’s 90th minute header sent York City to the arch to face Newport on May 12 – only four years after the forward was playing in front of “a man and his dog” for Racing Club Warwick.

After his goal secured a 1-1 draw with Luton Town in the semi-final second leg at Kenilworth Road, and a 2-1 win on aggregate, Blair declared it was the “proudest moment in my football career”.

And he said: “I started off as a nobody really and I’ve worked my way up. From four years ago when I was playing for Racing Club Warwick, if I’m in the squad, playing at Wembley – it’s amazing what can happen.

“If you had told me four years ago that I’d be playing at Wembley when I was playing there with a man and his dog watching I’d have punched you.”

Blair connected perfectly with a precision cross from Jamal Fyfield on the left to land the killer blow for York and he added of his goal: “I knew as soon as it left his foot that it was coming in my direction. I just thought ‘get a good connection on it, get it on target’. I did that, and got enough power on it to head it past the ’keeper.”

Blair revealed inspirational words from City boss Gary Mills revitalised the players after they conceded a 43rd minute goal to leave the tie 1-1 on aggregate.

He said: “We went in a little bit deflated and thinking ‘it’s going to be a battle’. But the gaffer said ‘hang on a second, it’s 1-1. We’re not going to go out or lose the game. Go out, man up, stick your chest out and show them what sort of team York City is’.

“We did that second half and I thought we were the better side.”

On Wembley, Blair said: “To tell me I’ve got a chance of playing there is frightening. I have got to now perform until the end of the season and make sure I get in the team.

“I’d like to think York will take a big following down there. It’s a day out and I know for a fact I’ll have half of Coventry going.”
